Corpay Built a Payment Card That AI Agents Can Issue Themselves

Corpay announced Agent Card on July 28, 2026, a capability that allows AI agents to generate virtual payment cards for business transactions on behalf of the organizations they serve, within spending controls that remain defined and enforced by the business rather than the agent.

The emerging challenge in agentic commerce is not whether AI agents can initiate purchases, technically they can, but whether businesses can maintain the authorization, visibility, and governance over those purchases that corporate spending policy requires, according to the press release. Agent Card is built specifically to address that gap. 

According to Corpay, each virtual card the agent generates is scoped to a specific purpose so the agent acts within an authorized boundary rather than with open purchasing authority.

"Agentic commerce is creating a new frontier for business payments," said Danny Martucci, President and GM of Commercial Card at Corpay. "With Agent Card, Corpay is enabling trusted AI agents to initiate secure, controlled payment workflows using the same principles that make virtual cards such a powerful tool for businesses today: authorization, control, visibility, and security."

Agent Card supports two distinct workflow types, according to the press release. The first is user-directed, a human initiates an agentic workflow and the agent generates a virtual card to complete the authorized transaction. 

The second is machine-to-machine, an automated system or agent pipeline initiates and completes the payment without human involvement at the transaction level, while remaining within pre-defined spending rules.

Both modes incorporate authentication and spend intent authorization, and the capability is built to integrate with third-party AI agent platforms rather than requiring businesses to adopt a Corpay-specific agent ecosystem. 

That interoperability is commercially significant as it allows organizations to deploy Agent Card alongside whichever AI agent infrastructure they already use, according to the press release.

The planned commercial applications reflect where AI agents are already beginning to act autonomously in business workflows: supplier payments, digital advertising purchases, travel bookings, and procurement. 

These are categories where the volume and routine nature of transactions make human approval at each step impractical, but where spending governance remains a regulatory and operational requirement, according to the press release.

"Virtual cards are uniquely suited for agentic commerce because they can be issued with precise controls for a specific purpose," said Tom Pierce, Chief AI Officer at Corpay. "That makes them an ideal payment method for AI-enabled workflows where businesses need automation without giving up governance."

Agent Card follows Corpay's April 2026 launch of an AI Virtual Assistant in the Corpay Complete platform and is described by the company as the next step in its AI-first product roadmap.
