Copart Expands Beyond Salvage With AI and ACV Acquisition

Copart is using AI, vehicle data and its $1.9 billion ACV acquisition to expand its vehicle remarketing business beyond traditional salvage auctions.

Copart is expanding its vehicle remarketing business through software, data and a $1.9 billion acquisition of ACV, a digital automotive marketplace focused on dealer-to-dealer wholesale transactions.

The deal, announced September 10, gives Copart access to ACV's dealer relationships, digital marketplace and vehicle-data technology while adding Copart's physical locations, logistics network and international buyer base. Copart expects the transaction to be breakeven when it closes and accretive to earnings in fiscal 2028, according to management.

The acquisition comes as the economics of vehicle repair and insurance claims are changing. Rising repair costs, more complex vehicles and higher total-loss rates are affecting how insurers, dealers and auction operators assess and dispose of vehicles.

AI Moves Closer to the Auction Floor

For Copart, AI is being applied to more than back-office automation. Jay Adair, CEO and Executive Chairman of Copart, said the company was focused on using AI to connect buyers with vehicles.

"The ability for a buyer to find that vehicle and to find a vehicle that matches their desired purchase is becoming more and more important every single day," Adair said during the company's fiscal 2026 earnings call.

The company is applying technology across the buyer journey, from discovery and membership through bidding and purchasing. Adair also identified accuracy as a priority, saying automation can reduce errors in Copart's processes.

Automotive companies are also implementing AI for vehicle inspection and vehicle-history data. AI-powered vehicle inspection is changing how cars are assessed, while Bumper's AI tool for vehicle history reports uses accident, maintenance, ownership and mileage information to help buyers evaluate vehicles.

ACV brings similar capabilities into a wholesale marketplace. Its technology supports digital transactions, inspections, vehicle condition information and valuation. The company generated $760 million in revenue and $10.4 billion in marketplace gross merchandise volume in 2025, with 829,276 marketplace units transacted.

Copart plans to keep ACV as a separate brand while integrating aspects of the two businesses. Adair said the company would evaluate ACV's technology for use across Copart and give buyers access to both businesses through connected experiences.

Rising Repair Costs Change the Economics

Copart's insurance business is operating against higher repair costs and changing claims patterns.

Global insurance unit volume fell 4.2% in fiscal 2026, with U.S. insurance units down 7.5%. At the same time, Copart reported higher average selling prices and pointed to rising collision severity and total-loss frequency as industry trends.

Average collision severity exceeded $6,300 per claim in the fourth quarter, up nearly 8.8% from a year earlier, according to Adair. He also cited CCC data showing repair costs were more than 50% above 2019 levels.

CCC's 2026 Crash Course report found that the average total cost of repairs reached $4,818 in 2025.

Those costs affect insurers' decisions about whether damaged vehicles are repaired or declared total losses. Copart's total-loss frequency reached 23.3% in the second quarter of fiscal 2026, compared with 22.4% a year earlier.

Modern vehicles also bring more software and electronic systems into the repair process. Adair cited an estimate that a new Tesla has approximately 100 million lines of code, using it to illustrate the increasing software complexity of vehicles.

Automakers are increasingly using vehicle data as a real-time manufacturing signal, while insurers are also applying AI across their operations. Root's AI-driven insurance model provides an example of AI being used across insurance.

For Copart, Adair said AI could improve the accuracy of its processes and help buyers find vehicles that match their requirements.

ACV Expands Copart's Whole-Car Business

Copart already has a substantial non-insurance operation. Non-insurance units represented roughly a quarter of its volume, while dealer units grew 5.8% in the fourth quarter.

Adair said ACV gives Copart access to franchise dealers and higher-end trade-ins. He also said ACV's approach to inventorying vehicles and producing condition reports differs from Copart's existing wholesale products.

Copart operates more than 275 locations, sells more than 4 million vehicles annually and has approximately 1 million members across more than 185 countries.

The network can also provide staging and storage for ACV vehicles. Adair said Copart could move vehicles from dealerships to its locations and then transport them after a sale, including for international buyers.

International buyers accounted for 38.2% of the units sold by Copart in the U.S. during fiscal 2026 and represented 45.7% of the total dollar value of those vehicles.

Copart's international business also grew during the quarter. International units increased 10%, while international revenue rose 11.7% to $222.1 million.

Fiscal 2026 revenue reached $4.7 billion, up 0.4%, while net income declined 4.4% to $1.48 billion. Fourth-quarter revenue increased 2.4% to $1.2 billion, while net income fell 17.4%.

The ACV acquisition combines Copart's physical network and international buyer base with ACV's dealer relationships, digital marketplace and vehicle-data technology. Copart expects the transaction to be accretive to earnings in fiscal 2028, subject to closing.
