DHL and Alibaba to Explore AI-Powered Logistics for SMEs Worldwide

The companies will explore connecting Alibaba.com's Accio AI agent with DHL's logistics services to simplify freight quotes, bookings and cross-border trade for SMEs.
DHL Group and Alibaba.com have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore using artificial intelligence (AI) to simplify international logistics for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The companies will evaluate how AI-powered tools can support businesses across the international trade journey, including sourcing and supplier discovery, logistics quotations, bookings and shipment execution. The agreement was announced at Alibaba.com's CoCreate 2026 Conference in Los Angeles on September 10.
The collaboration will focus initially on connecting DHL Global Forwarding's logistics services with Alibaba.com's Accio, an agentic AI platform designed to help SMEs execute business tasks without requiring code.
"SMEs are the backbone of the global economy, but many still face challenges navigating the complex rules, regulations, and trade requirements that come with international expansion," Katja Busch, Chief Commercial Officer DHL and Head of DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation, said. "By bringing together Alibaba.com's digital commerce expertise and DHL's logistics capabilities, we want to explore how technology can help businesses spend less time managing complexity and more time focusing on growth."
AI Agents Move Into Logistics Workflows
Under the agreement, Accio will be connected to DHL Global Forwarding's Quotation & Booking capabilities. This would allow businesses to obtain real-time freight forwarding quotes, assess shipping options and book shipments through the AI platform.
The approach reflects a wider shift toward embedding AI agents directly into operational workflows. For example, AI agents are being introduced into supply chain workflows, where they can interact with business processes rather than only provide information.
DHL has also been developing AI applications across its logistics operations. Its existing digital tools include myDHLi, which provides customers with services such as freight quotations, bookings, shipment tracking, documentation and analytics. DHL's Quote + Book service allows customers to obtain air and ocean freight quotes and compare shipping options.
The companies said the Accio integration would be the first in a planned suite of DHL logistics capabilities intended to automate business tasks and improve operational efficiency for SMEs.
Kuo Zhang, President of Alibaba.com, said AI was making capabilities that previously required significant time, expertise and resources more accessible to SMEs. He said connecting Accio with DHL's logistics capabilities could help businesses move through cross-border commerce more quickly.
Connecting Commerce With Freight Execution
The partnership extends Alibaba.com's effort to make Accio useful across more stages of business operations. Alibaba launched Accio Work in March 2026 as a no-code enterprise AI agent for global businesses, describing it as a tool for handling longer-running business tasks.
Alibaba.com is a global B2B e-commerce platform that serves SMEs across international markets. Its integration with DHL would connect the commercial activity taking place on the platform with a logistics process required to execute international orders.
That connection also illustrates a broader challenge for enterprise AI: agents need access to reliable, current business data and systems if they are expected to take action. The data foundation behind agentic AI becomes particularly important when an agent must work with live pricing, shipping options and booking information.
Tim Robertson, Executive Vice President Accelerated Digitalization, DHL Global Forwarding, said the collaboration would explore how AI could give customers faster access to information, greater transparency and more efficient logistics processes.
The MoU does not announce a full commercial rollout of the integrated service. Instead, DHL and Alibaba.com will evaluate how the companies' respective digital and logistics capabilities can be connected to support SMEs engaged in international trade.
