Mount Sinai Medical Center has expanded Epic's ambient AI documentation tool to inpatient nurses after physicians reduced charting time per encounter by nearly 30%.

Mount Sinai Medical Center has expanded its ambient artificial intelligence (AI) documentation platform from physicians to inpatient nurses, becoming the first health system in Florida and the fourth in the United States to deploy the technology for nursing staff.

The Miami Beach-based health system announced on July 28 that Epic's Chart with Art is now available to inpatient nurses following an earlier physician rollout. The company said physicians who used the technology reduced the time spent documenting each patient encounter by nearly 30%, along with after-hours charting, before the tool was introduced to nursing workflows.

The rollout reflects a broader trend in healthcare AI, where hospitals are extending ambient documentation beyond physicians to reduce administrative work across the clinical workforce. Similar deployments have recently emerged in military healthcare and other health systems as providers seek to reduce clinician burnout while maintaining oversight of AI-generated documentation. 

Rollout Follows Physician Validation

Chart with Art converts recorded conversations into structured clinical documentation that supports patient care plans. According to Mount Sinai, the system works in both English and Spanish, allowing clinicians to document patient interactions regardless of which of the two languages patients choose to speak.

"Our nurses came into this profession to care for people. Chart with Art lets them step out from behind the keyboard and be fully present at the bedside," Wendy Stuart, Chief Nursing Officer at Mount Sinai Medical Center, said in the announcement.

The hospital said the nursing deployment will begin with a gradual rollout across inpatient units during its first week of availability.

Before expanding the technology, Mount Sinai physicians worked with Epic over several months to refine the system in clinical settings. The hospital said that experience helped establish confidence in the tool's performance before extending it to nurses.

"Patients should know we held this technology to the same standard we hold ourselves to," Dr. Alon Weizer, Chief Medical Officer at Mount Sinai Medical Center, said. He added that no AI-generated documentation enters a patient's medical record until it is reviewed and approved by a clinician.

Epic also described the rollout as an expansion of ambient AI across the care team.

"Mount Sinai is one of the first to bring Chart with Art to the bedside, and its nurses helped us get it right, capturing more of what their shifts involve as it happens," Corey Miller, Vice President of Research and Development at Epic, said.

Ambient AI Expands Across Healthcare

Hospitals have largely introduced ambient AI through physician documentation, where AI systems listen to patient conversations and generate draft clinical notes for clinician review. More recently, healthcare organizations have begun adapting the technology for nursing workflows, where documentation requirements also consume a significant portion of clinicians' time.

Mount Sinai said patients will be informed whenever Chart with Art is used during their care and may decline participation at any time. The organization also emphasized that the technology does not replace clinical judgment because every note must be reviewed and confirmed by a nurse or physician before becoming part of the patient's medical record.

Chief Information Officer Tom Gillette said the organization deliberately validated the technology before expanding its use.

"We did not rush this. Our physicians spent months working side by side with Epic's on-site team to prove the technology in our own clinical settings," Gillette said.

The latest deployment adds to Mount Sinai's broader AI strategy. Earlier this year, the health system expanded AI into surgical operations by deploying computer vision technology to automate supply documentation and reduce manual work in operating rooms. 

The announcement also follows growing adoption of ambient documentation across U.S. healthcare. Earlier this month, the Defense Health Agency expanded an AI-powered clinical documentation assistant across military hospitals after pilot participants reported spending less time on paperwork while retaining clinician review of every AI-generated note.
