Wellstar Deploys AI Medication Management System With BD Across Hospitals

Wellstar integrates AI-powered dispensing and infusion systems to improve medication safety, inventory visibility, and clinical workflows.

Wellstar Health System is deploying an AI-powered medication management platform across its hospitals through a partnership with BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), the company said in a release on May 5.

The system integrates BD Pyxis Pro dispensing technology with BD Alaris infusion systems to connect pharmacy operations with bedside medication delivery. The deployment is designed to improve accuracy, reduce manual steps, and give clinicians real-time visibility into medication inventory and usage.

The rollout extends Wellstar’s use of AI into a core clinical workflow, moving beyond administrative and analytics use cases into direct patient care operations. This is part of a broader shift toward embedding AI into frontline healthcare systems.

Expanding AI Into Core Medication Workflows

Wellstar is implementing BD Pyxis Pro with analytics capabilities through BD Incada, which allows clinicians to query medication inventory using natural-language inputs. The platform provides enterprise-wide visibility into supply levels and usage patterns, enabling teams to identify shortages, reduce waste, and manage distribution across facilities.

The system includes dashboards that convert operational data into actionable insights for pharmacy and clinical teams. These tools are intended to support decision-making around medication availability and workforce allocation.

The integration also connects BD Alaris infusion systems with electronic medical records (EMRs) using barcode scanning. Clinicians can send infusion orders directly from the EMR and receive status updates back into the system, creating a closed-loop process across prescribing, dispensing, and administration.

Susan Wright, Vice President, Pharmacy Services at Wellstar Health, said the deployment supports the system’s approach to consistent care delivery. “Partnering with BD to implement this technology strengthens our ability to focus on patient-centered programs and empower our teams to deliver care with confidence and compassion,” Wright said in the release.

Building On A Broader AI Strategy

Wellstar has been expanding its use of AI across clinical and operational systems, including patient risk detection, workforce management, and front-end patient workflows.

The medication management deployment extends that strategy into high-frequency clinical processes where accuracy and timing are critical. Medication administration involves multiple handoffs between pharmacy systems, clinicians, and electronic records, making it a key area for automation and data integration.

The AI layer within BD Incada provides on-demand insights into medication usage and inventory trends, which can be used to optimize supply chains and reduce excess stock. It also supports workflow efficiency by reducing manual processes and enabling faster clinical decisions.

These capabilities align with broader healthcare adoption patterns where AI is being used to deliver measurable operational improvements, including reduced waste and better resource utilization.

Connor Bates, Worldwide President, Medication Management Solutions at BD, said the integration is intended to improve safety and coordination. “By integrating BD Pyxis and BD Alaris technologies, Wellstar is setting an example of how health systems can achieve connected, intelligent medication management that benefits both patients and clinicians,” Bates said in the release.

Wellstar also participates in BD’s Strategic Development Council for Medication Management Solutions, contributing input from pharmacy operations, nursing, and informatics to guide product development.

The deployment positions medication management as part of Wellstar’s broader effort to integrate AI across its clinical infrastructure, with a focus on safety, workflow consistency, and system-wide visibility.
