Saia Creates VP of Data and AI Role as LTL Carriers Expand Automation

The agent incorporates fleet knowledge, application expertise and operational insight from across United Rentals’ business.

Saia has appointed Gautam Bhat as Vice President of Data and AI, creating a new executive role focused on enterprise data strategy and artificial intelligence deployment across the less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier’s operations.

Bhat will oversee initiatives tied to data infrastructure, AI adoption, modernization, and long-term technology scaling across the business. The company said the role will focus on advancing the “responsible use of AI across the business.”

“The opportunity to lead Data & AI here couldn’t be more energizing as the LTL space is ripe for AI transformation,” Bhat wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Bhat previously held leadership positions at industrial automation company ABB, packaging manufacturer Graphic Packaging International, and several General Electric businesses, including GE Energy Connections.

The move adds another example of freight and logistics companies creating dedicated executive leadership roles around AI infrastructure and operational analytics. Similar investments are appearing across freight operations, including AI-driven workflow automation, routing, and network optimization.

Data Analytics and Optimization Become Core LTL Priorities

Saia President and CEO Frederick “Fritz” Holzgrefe previously said during the company’s first-quarter earnings call that data analytics and optimization systems remain central to the carrier’s strategy.

“We’ll continue to invest in those capabilities and expand the use of those tools,” Holzgrefe said during the earnings discussion referenced in the Trucking Dive report.

LTL carriers are increasingly tying profitability and operational efficiency to technology modernization efforts involving shipment visibility, routing optimization, and enterprise data systems. Similar operational efficiency initiatives are shaping broader freight strategies across the sector.

Saia operates one of the larger LTL networks in the United States, with more than 210 facilities and over 7,500 tractors. At that scale, AI systems can affect multiple operational areas simultaneously, including dock planning, pricing, predictive maintenance, labor scheduling, and freight movement optimization.

Large logistics operators are also investing in centralized data platforms designed to unify operational information across transportation and supply-chain systems. Recent deployments in the sector include AI infrastructure aimed at consolidating fragmented logistics data and improving operational coordination.

Transportation Companies Expand AI Beyond Pilot Projects

The transportation sector is becoming a larger target for enterprise AI deployment as companies move beyond experimentation into operational implementation.

Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Transportation and Logistics found that approximately $65.5 billion worth of annual transportation-sector work is highly exposed to AI augmentation. The research also found that AI could affect at least one task in 83% of transportation occupations analyzed.

Transportation companies are increasingly deploying AI systems to automate repetitive operational tasks, shipment coordination, planning workflows, and network management. Companies across logistics networks are also expanding AI into routine supply-chain execution functions, including automated shipment tracking and exception management.

Many transportation operators are currently positioning AI investments around cost control, operational productivity, and efficiency gains rather than direct revenue expansion. Similar patterns have emerged across large logistics and transportation businesses.

Saia did not disclose additional details about planned AI deployments or timelines tied to the new leadership role.
