How Do New AI Agents Enhance Automation Efficiency?

New agents compress diagnostic time from hours or days to minutes while keeping human operators in control of every recommendation.

On July 27, Emerson, the global automation company, introduced five new Ovation AI Agents for the power and water industries, expanding the artificial intelligence capabilities of its Ovation Automation Platform 4.0 release. The company said the agents will monitor, analyze and recommend actions across critical plant operations.

"Ovation AI Agents deliver a major step change in our AI portfolio, representing a significant advancement in how we help our customers build more intelligent, efficient and resilient operations," said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson's power and water solutions business. He said the agents allow operators to "shift from reactive to proactive planning without disrupting daily workflows."

According to the company, the five agents are the Sequence Assistant Agent, Alarm Insight Agent, Predictive Maintenance Agent, Root Cause Agent and Loop Performance Monitor Agent. Emerson said the agents are embedded into native operational workflows and operator tools, removing the need to switch between separate systems.

Emerson said the Sequence Assistant Agent generates context-aware prompts from real-time deviations and historical failures to help resolve stalled control sequences. The company said the Alarm Insight Agent prioritizes and summarizes alarm context during alarm floods.

The Predictive Maintenance Agent detects equipment degradation, prioritizes maintenance and helps prevent unplanned failures, according to the company. The Root Cause Agent correlates alarms, trips and live equipment conditions to identify the source of asset issues, Emerson said.

The Loop Performance Monitor Agent analyzes control loop performance for problems such as oscillation, deadband and deficient tuning, the company said.

This expansion builds on Emerson's existing Ovation Virtual Advisor product, according to the company. While Emerson said Virtual Advisor delivers real-time insights through natural language interaction, the company said the new agents are time synchronized with the Ovation 4.0 system and work autonomously in the background, continuously monitoring plant and equipment conditions.

Emerson said the agents use human-in-the-loop design, meaning they operate proactively but require human approval before any action is taken.

Measurable Impact

The company said early deployments have shown measurable impact. In one case, Emerson said the Sequence Assistant Agent identified a failed permissive condition in seconds, a task the company said previously took hours of manual investigation across logic diagrams and point values.

At another major utility, Emerson said the Predictive Maintenance Agent flagged a subtle equipment anomaly before it became critical, preventing costly unplanned downtime.

The company said the five agents will launch this fall, with customers able to deploy individual agents based on operational priorities. Emerson said its broader roadmap includes 28 additional planned agents covering operations, maintenance, optimization, instrumentation and control, management and cross-domain functions.

The company also plans to showcase its Ovation AI Agent Builder at this year's Ovation Users Group Conference, which Emerson said will let users design, deploy and customize agents for their own operations.
