Commonwealth Bank Appoints Mary-Anne Williams as Its First Chief AI Scientist

"CommBank has built one of the most advanced AI capabilities of any bank in the world, and I'm excited to be joining at such a pivotal moment."

Commonwealth Bank appointed Professor Mary-Anne Williams as its first Chief AI Scientist on May 18, 2026, creating a role that does not yet exist at any other Australian bank and bringing one of the country's most internationally recognized AI researchers directly into the institution's executive leadership.

Williams joins from the University of New South Wales, where she holds the Michael J Crouch Chair for Innovation, founded and leads the UNSW Business AI Lab, and serves as Deputy Director of the UNSW AI Institute.

She is a Fellow at Stanford University and a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, one of the peak international bodies for AI research, giving her a research profile that places her among a small group of academics with both frontier AI expertise and practical application experience across business, government, and society.

"CommBank has built one of the most advanced AI capabilities of any bank in the world, and I'm excited to be joining at such a pivotal moment," Williams said. "My focus will be on advancing our understanding of the societal implications of AI and supporting continued responsible AI innovation across CommBank."

As Chief AI Scientist, Williams will lead CommBank's team of Distinguished AI Scientists, a group of globally experienced researchers specializing in machine learning, responsible AI, AI security, and generative AI.

Her mandate covers shaping CommBank's AI research agenda, attracting and developing world-class AI talent, and supporting the continued application of responsible AI across the bank's operations, according to the press release.

Her research focus, transforming how organizations manage and orchestrate generative AI agents to drive innovation, is directly aligned with the direction CommBank is heading as it moves from AI experimentation into scaled deployment.

Agentic AI orchestration is the technical challenge that sits beneath the bank's ambitions in automated customer service, fraud detection, financial advice, and internal operations.

Ranil Boteju, who joined CommBank as Chief AI Officer in November 2025, described the appointment as reflecting the bank's ambition to be at the forefront of AI research.

"Mary-Anne is one of Australia's most respected AI leaders and brings a rare combination of academic leadership, commercial insight, and deep technical expertise that will help accelerate our AI strategy," he said.

CommBank ranked fourth globally and first in Asia Pacific in the 2025 Evident AI Index, which measures AI maturity across the banking sector, recognized specifically for leadership in talent development and responsible AI.

The bank maintains AI partnerships with Anthropic, AWS, Microsoft, and OpenAI, and operates Technology Hubs in both San Francisco and Seattle to develop AI capability alongside its technology partners.
